Program Description
The Mathematics/Statistics and Economics B.A. integrates the core principles of economics, mathematics and statistics, providing students with a comprehensive education in these fields. In the job market, there is high demand for economics majors with strong quantitative and statistical skills. This program will produce career-ready graduates, able to excel in a variety of fields involving quantitative analysis.
The Mathematics/Statistics and Economics B.A. program is ideal for students seeking a variety of industry or government jobs that require more technical training, or for students who plan to pursue a graduate degree in economics after completing their B.A. degree.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates there were 34,600 mathematicians and statisticians employed across the United States in 2024. On average, about 2,700 openings for mathematicians and statisticians are projected each year. There is great demand for mathematicians and statisticians, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 8% increase from 2024-2034, much faster than average for all occupations.
Economics is a social science that seeks to model the behavior of economic agents (consumers, workers, firms, and government agencies) in an effort to explain the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services in a world where scarcity exists. Mathematicians use theory, computational techniques, algorithms and computer technology to solve problems in various fields, including economics, business, finance, and social sciences. This major gives students a balanced education in both Economics and Mathematics/Statistics. Honors Program/University Scholars Requirements
A University Honors/Scholars Program student will be able to graduate with Honors/Scholars in Mathematics/Statistics and Economics by completing the general requirements of the Honors or University Scholars Program and all of the following:
- Satisfy all requirements for the Mathematics/Statistics and Economics (B.A.) major.
- Honors contract one 300/400 level ECN elective and one 400 level MTH/STA elective from the approved electives for Mathematics/Statistics and Economics B.A. major, for a total of 6 honors credits. These courses may be counted toward the major as well.
- Honors contract ECN 428 or take MTH 496H. This would also meet the capstone requirement toward the major.
