Program Curriculum

The Master of Science in Statistics and Analytics degree program requires 30 credit hours. Full time students can finish the degree in as little as one year. Part time students take fewer courses per semester and have a flexible degree completion timeline.

Students in the applied statistics track take seven core courses:

  • Applied multivariate statistics
  • Applied regression models
  • Bayesian data analysis
  • Design and analysis of experiments
  • Probability and mathematical statistics
  • Statistical consulting and programming
  • Statistics for research projects

In addition, students must complete elective credits in subjects related to applied statistics to bolster their understanding and application of skills. We offer various electives, including the applied statistics exit project, during which students can work with a faculty supervisor as they read papers in technical journals, choose a research topic and write a technical report on statistics.

Admissions Requirements

In addition to meeting the College of Graduate Studies requirements for admission, we expect that MS in applied statistics applicants have:

  • Completed an undergraduate course in inferential statistics and a programming course.
  • A demonstrated mathematical background that includes coursework in multivariate calculus and linear algebra. 
  • A baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall grade-point average of 3.0. 
    • Applicants to the applied statistics specialization should hold a bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, data science or other technical area.
  • Scores for the GRE submitted with the application. 

Applicants who don't meet the first three requirements may be admitted on a probationary basis, subject to removing deficiencies during the first year of graduate study. Those without an undergraduate or graduate course in inferential statistics must first complete STA 323 or an equivalent course in statistical methods before entry into the program.
