Theresa Lincheck

Education:

BS Physics (Cleveland State University – 2021)
BM Music Performance (Honors) (Cleveland State University – 2021)
Currently: PhD student in Meteorology, University of Oklahoma

Experience:

CSU SPS Chapter Secretary (2019 – 2021)
REU at National Weather Center at the University of Oklahoma, 2020

Why CSU Physics? Initially a Music Performance major, I discovered my excitement for studying physics while taking Physics I & II at CSU and declared a double major. As a physics student, I quickly became involved in research focusing on mixing in cumulus clouds and further discovered my interests in the atmospheric sciences, inspiring me to eventually pursue graduate school in that field. I also had opportunities to be active in SPS, travel to an SPS physics conference in 2019, and even participate in an REU internship at the National Weather Center. These experiences were crucial to helping me become a better scientist, researcher, and person, yet were only possible thanks to the amazing support and guidance I received from several CSU physics faculty throughout my undergrad. Being in a smaller physics department at CSU allowed me to be more engaged in my classes, receive personalized mentorship, and gain invaluable hands-on experiences that greatly prepared me to succeed.

In his own words: I have been a dedicated researcher throughout my time at CSU. My experience includes over three years working on understanding polymeric microgels through laser light scattering in Dr. Streletzky’s lab and a year working on cross-shelf nitrate fluxes on the Oregon continental shelf and presenting the results of my research across the country. The latter is a project I began working on in the summer of 2021 through the Ocean Sciences REU program at California State University, Monterey Bay. I have taught multiple introductory physics labs for the physics department as undergraduate TA since 2020.

George Tomaras

George Tomaras

Education:

BS Physics (Cleveland State University – 2023)
BS Chemistry (Cleveland State University – 2021)
Currently: PhD physics student, Rice University, Houston TX

Experience:

CSU SPS Vice President 2022-23

A bit about him: Joined CSU in the Fall of 2021 after he had almost completed my undergraduate studies in mathematics at Notre Dame College. In addition to guiding his explorations of basic physical topics, the physics department at CSU offered him opportunities to conduct scholarly research, travel to national conferences, and become a member—and eventually vice-president—of SPS. George was involved in his first major research project in the summer of 2022, working with Drs. Fodor and Kothapalli in the field of microfluidics (fluid flow in channels of dimensions comparable to the thickness of the human hair), the results of which led to a peer-reviewed publication which I lead-authored. A very important part of his time at CSU has been his involvement with SPS. Being an introvert, through SPS he has been able to realize the breadth of the impact of our science and the importance of promoting it. Finally, he strived to promote his enthusiasm for physics through his teaching assistantship, guiding lab sections of introductory physics classes.
