In a recent episode of the Cleveland Conversations collaboration CSU physicist and educator, Dr. Jearl Walker reflected on his more than five decades career in teaching physics. Dr. Walker talks about his approach in engaging students through emphasis that physics is not just abstract theory but a a tool to see the wonder in everyday phenomena. Dr. Walker discusses how his first book The Flying Circus of Physics came to be, and how that led him to an internationally recognized career in physics pedagogy and outreach, including developing the PBS “Kinetic Karnival” series which used dramatic experiments (like walking on hot coals or dipping a hand in molten lead under special conditions) to illustrate physics principles.
