In Memoriam: Dr. Bette Bonder, Former Dean of the College of Sciences and Health Professions
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Bette Rae Bonder on March 11, 2026. Dr. Bonder was an extraordinary scholar and leader whose influence extended across Cleveland State University and the broader fields of occupational therapy, aging, cultural competence, and mental health.
Over the course of her distinguished career, Dr. Bonder served in numerous academic roles, ultimately concluding her tenure as the Dean of the College of Science and Health Professions at CSU. After retiring, she continued to make a memorable impact at CSU by teaching as a Professor Emeritus and by supporting student scholarships and other funds. She was recognized nationally as one of the 100 most influential occupational therapists during the profession’s 100‑year anniversary—an honor that reflected decades of meaningful contributions to education, research, and community engagement.
Beyond her remarkable professional accomplishments, Dr. Bonder was deeply admired for her warmth, generosity, and ability to make people feel valued. Those who knew her often spoke about how profoundly she touched lives through her compassion and authenticity.
Our thoughts are with her husband, Dr. Patrick Bray, her children, grandchildren, and all who loved her.
The family is considering an additional celebration of life so we will share details about those arrangements as they become available.
Please join us in honoring Dr. Bonder’s life, legacy, and the countless ways she strengthened our community—and, for many of us, shaped who we aspire to be as leaders, colleagues, and human beings.
