Congratulations to the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD) and Dr. Bibo Li for receiving a Shared Instrument Grant (S10) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to acquire an advanced biomolecular imaging system, the Amersham Typhoon 5. This next generation laser scanner is designed for versatile imaging and precise quantitation of fluorescent, colorimetric, and radiolabeled proteins and nucleic acids.

GRHD scientists aim to enhance and integrate research focused on gene regulation in health and disease leading to better understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling these processes and the identification of therapeutic targets. GRHD research has implications for the diagnosis and treatment of many of the most common diseases found around the world, including heart disease, neurological disease, infectious disease, and cancer. 

Although GRHD researchers work in various disciplines and with different systems, a common theme for many of the research experiments performed in their labs is to measure various changes in cellular macromolecules (DNA, RNA, and proteins) during development, aging or under diseased conditions. The Amersham Typhoon 5 has the specifications required for GRHD researchers to study gene expression regulation. It will be located on the second floor of the Science Research building in the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences.
