Explore Opportunities for Undergraduates

Undergraduates in the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences can pursue our majors, minors, and certificate programs; engage in cutting edge undergraduate research and internships; participate in specialized programs including Pre-Professional Programs in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine, Secondary Teaching Licensure, and Honors; leverage financial aid and scholarship opportunities; connect with academic advisors; and explore our accelerated 4+1 master's program.

Undergraduate Student Research and Internships

Substantial external funding and state of the art equipment enable cutting edge research in two broad foci: molecular and cellular understanding of biological processes to identify therapeutic targets relevant to reproductive health, aging, heart disease, infectious disease, and cancer; and ecological and environmental understanding of processes at the organism and ecosystem level in a world of changing climate, urbanization, human impacts, and invasive species. Career readiness is developed through internships in ecology and environmental science. Students engage in hands-on experiences through paid or volunteer internships with regional businesses, environmental consulting firms and labs; local conservation, planning, and watershed organizations.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Many Biology and Environmental Science majors receive financial support through the State of Ohio’s Choose Ohio First scholarship program and through the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Honors College. Cleveland State University and the College of Arts and Sciences offer a variety of additional scholarship opportunities.

Undergraduate Advising and Academic Coaching

The Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences offers dedicated departmental advising for undergraduate biology students and environmental science students and advising for the Medical Laboratory Science program. The College of Arts and Sciences Academic Coaching staff offer support to students who are majoring or interested in biology or environmental science.

Accelerated Master's Program

The Biology Accelerated Master's Program enables students to earn a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in biology in as few as five years. Undergraduate students are eligible to apply to the Accelerated MS program after completing sixty credits (at least 30 of which must be at CSU). This is typically at the end of the sophomore year.
