Continuing Education (CE) World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
The Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers non-credit conversational language courses. These non-credit classes will focus on developing practical conversational skills for business or travel and will include relevant cultural information for the language being studied. These courses are designed for people wanting to brush up on or learn a new language, as well as those planning to travel abroad or do business with a foreign country.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Beginning Hungarian I (usually offered in fall) |

Beginning Hungarian I starts from scratch, absolutely zero. It will give you phonology insights, pronunciation help, and basic shopping, telephone, and ordering-in-a-restaurant vocabulary, as well as numbers and some background on vowel harmony (how to attach the right endings); verb declension according to first, second, third-person singular, and plural. While this course does not delve too deeply, it does gives you a solid start and a basic understanding. Topics include pronunciation, introducing yourself, informal vs. formal address; colors, numbers, amounts, countries, days of the week; and shopping phrases, some verb endings, ordering, and paying in stores. Beginning Hungarian II (usually offered in spring) |

Beginning Hungarian II builds on level 1. Level 1 is not a prerequisite for this course, as you may have some comparable basics from elsewhere. You will learn some more complex language concepts, such as the definite vs. indefinite verb conjugation. Topics include vocabulary in the house, at the restaurant, on a visit, etc.; basic food, bakery, and cooking vocabulary; months and time, hobbies, family/siblings; and fun facts about Hungary and Hungarians. This class is entirely online, and you can go at your own pace. The instructor can schedule web or phone meetings as needed to promote your learning. All course materials are included. |
Intermediate Hungarian i (usually offered in Fall) |

Intermediate Hungarian I builds on the material learned in Beginning Hungarian II, and it aims to further develop proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing Hungarian. Completion of Beginning Hungarian II is not a prerequisite for this course, as you may have some comparable knowledge from other sources. This course introduces more advanced language structures and vocabulary, as well as develops communicative competence and confidence. Students will gain necessary linguistic, contextual and cultural information when engaging in various situations. This class is entirely online, and you can go at your own pace. The instructor can schedule web meetings as needed to promote your learning. All course materials are included. |
Intermediate Hungarian II (usually offered in Spring) |

Intermediate Hungarian II builds on the material learned in CE Intermediate Hungarian I and aims to further develop proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing Hungarian. Completion of CE Intermediate Hungarian I is not a prerequisite for this course, as you may have some comparable knowledge from other sources. As a continuation of CE Intermediate Hungarian I, it makes the students more confident in their linguistic knowledge and introduces more advanced language structures and vocabulary. The course develops communicative competence beyond the most immediate and concrete topics. It also aids students with more detailed linguistic, cultural and contextual information. |
Beginning Slovenian I (usually offered in fall) |

Beginning Slovenian I will introduce you to the Slovenian language in the easiest way possible. The course is constructed so you can use the language in everyday situations, with your friends, family, and others. We learn pronunciation; greetings and goodbyes; common and useful phrases and interactions; vocabulary for food, drink, health, and well-being; and of course grammar. A benefit of this course is the Tegrity class link, which is in every single online lecture. This class is entirely online, and you can go at your own pace. Beginning Slovenian II (usually offered in spring) |

Beginning Slovenian II is a continuation of Beginning Slovenian I. This course is constructed to increase your ability to use the language in everyday situations, with your friends, family, and others. It is the next course for those students who have finished Beginning Slovenian I or who have some knowledge of the language. We will learn more useful grammar and pronunciation, as well as numbers, and phrases for the store, market, buying, restaurant, and weather. This class is entirely online, and you can go at your own pace. The instructor can schedule web or phone meetings as needed to promote your learning. All course materials are included. |
Intermediate Slovenian I (usually offered in fall) |

Intermediate Slovenian I is an introduction to what one could call "second-year" Slovenian. It is the next course for those students who have finished Beginning Slovenian II or who have good knowledge of the language. This course expounds upon grammar and language skills, with new vocabulary and phrases to describe peoples, events, hobbies, locations, home, and things related to it, as well as reading and translating. This class is entirely online, and you can go at your own pace. The instructor can schedule web or phone meetings as needed to promote your learning. All course materials are included. |
Intermediate Slovenian II (usually offered in spring) |

Intermediate Slovenian II is a continuation of Intermediate Slovenian I. We will cover more advanced, intermediate-level grammar, colloquial language, dialects, and other languages in Slovenian language, reading, business/formal language, more about hotels, ordinal numbers, sports, and exceptions in Slovenian language. This class is entirely online, and you can go at your own pace. The instructor can schedule web or phone meetings as needed to promote your learning. All course materials are included. |
