Bachelor of Arts in World Languages and Cultures
The Bachelor of Arts in World Languages and Cultures (WLC) provides students with expertise in past and present world cultures in the United States and abroad and trains students in participation in the lives of the world's populations, as well as in their analysis. Whether students concentrate on one of the language-centered programs or on linguistic and anthropological sciences, they will be prepared to participate effectively in a global society. Graduates go on to use their knowledge and skills in a broad range of professions such as education, business, health care, government service, social work, museum curation, law and law enforcement, historic preservation, the computer industry and more.
The program competencies can open doors to career opportunities, personal enrichment and thoughtful civic engagement.
Core Tracks
Anthropology is the study of the human being: anthropo. Our cultural and biological diversity has developed over human history. In this discipline, we study how humans have come to be who and what we are today - our physical development and the effects of nutrition and diseases, the ways we organize ourselves in groups, the beliefs and values shared within and across cultures, the ways we mark our identity with the languages we speak.

The goal is to gain a scientific understanding of the nature of language that can be applied in many areas, such as linguistics, anthropology, speech and hearing, language teaching, computational linguistics, and cognitive science. Linguists also systematically compare human language to animal communication systems. Linguistics majors will get thorough training in the core areas of linguistics, such as Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology and Syntax; and learn how linguists find evidence for their hypotheses and what are the cutting edge topics in the field today.
LinguisticsThe Spanish major integrates the study of Spanish Peninsular and Latin American areas of literature, linguistics, and culture. Students can also concentrate in language studies or combine any of the above areas for teaching or other professional careers.
The dual track combines two of the language concentrations.
