Operation STEM (OpSTEM) at Cleveland State University (CSU) is a student success initiative designed to recruit, assist, and retain students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Recognizing the significant challenges students face in completing their STEM degrees, particularly in mathematics, OpSTEM has implemented targeted interventions to address these barriers. The program’s primary focus is to support students in overcoming obstacles in introductory precalculus and calculus courses, which are critical for success in STEM disciplines.
Key OpSTEM interventions include:
- Summer Bridge Program: A two-week preparatory program designed to strengthen foundational math skills and ease the transition into college-level coursework.
- Mandatory Supplemental Instruction: Peer-led sessions that provide additional instruction and support to help students master complex mathematical concepts.
- Free Summer Calculus I Course: Eligible students can enroll in this cost-free course, ensuring they remain on track for their degree requirements without financial burden.
- Personalized Coaching and Advising: Individualized guidance helps students navigate academic challenges and develop strategies for success throughout their STEM journey.
- Professional Development Workshops: Structured sessions or training events designed to help OpSTEM Scholars enhance their skills, knowledge, and competencies related to their professional roles.
