What is Operation STEM?

OpSTEM targets students pursuing all disciplines of engineering, data science, computer science, math, chemistry, physics, and biology (calculus track), in particular first-generation and minority students.

OpSTEM Scholars participate in a summer bridge program known as the OpSTEM Summer Institute. During the OpSTEM Summer Institute, scholars participate in math skills review sessions, explore and familiarize themselves with campus through self-guided activities, engage in STEM & motivational speaker series, make new friends who have similar interests and goals, receive academic course guidance, learn about free assistance resources on campus, and undergo ALICE Training. Additionally, scholars receive their Introduction to University Life General Education Requirement (ASC 101 or ESC 100) for their participation in the OpSTEM Summer Institute.

During the academic year, scholars will meet with their OpSTEM Coach, participate in supplemental instruction sessions led by STEM Peer Teachers (SPTs*), engage in professional development workshops, participate in the Engineering Connections Fair their Fall Semester, attend STEM speaker events, and attend social events.

*SPTs are fellow undergraduate students that provide the Scholars and fellow students with three weekly, 50-minute supplemental learning sessions in Precalculus and Calculus courses.
