Graduate Studies

Those wishing to pursue a graduate degree from the School of Music must first be admitted to CSU's College of Graduate Studies.

Information on University admissions requirements, financial aid, and other general information may be obtained from Cleveland State's Graduate Admissions Office. All College of Graduate Studies admission requirements must be met.

Formal Notification of Acceptance: After a review of applicants' transcripts and documents, the School of Music makes its recommendation for acceptance to the Graduate Program in Music to the College of Graduate Studies. The Graduate College sends successful applicants the notification of acceptance.

Composition

Students wishing to learn more about the Graduate Music Composition Degree can reach out to a.rindfleisch@csuohio.edu

Students intending to apply for the Master of Music in Composition will have to submit a portfolio of works which will be reviewed by the composition faculty.

Students will complete a total of 30 credit hours which include history, research, and pedagogy courses as well as a composition forum, production courses, recital, and thesis courses.

The music composition resource center provides students with the tools they need to succeed in their degree path including computers with notation software, unlimited access to binding machines and photocopiers to create professional scores, and a separate laboratory fitted with 15 iMac midi stations for students to use. 

Performance

Students seeking a Master of Music in Vocal Performance will take 35 credits including courses in history, diction, pedagogy, and research, as well as recitals, ensembles, lessons, and more. Students seeking a Master of Music in Keyboard Performance will take 30 credits including courses in history,  pedagogy, and research, as well as recitals, ensembles, lessons, collaborative piano, and more. Students seeking a Master of Music in Instrumental Performance will take 30 credits including courses in history, pedagogy, and research, as well as recitals, ensembles, lessons, and more. Students seeking a Master of Music in String Performance will take 30 credits including courses in history, pedagogy, and research, as well as recitals, ensembles, lessons, and more. Students seeking a Master of Music in Percussion Performance will take 30 credits including courses in history, pedagogy, and research, as well as recitals, ensembles, lessons, and more. Education

Students seeking entry into the Master of Music in Music Education program will need to provide two letters of recommendation from supervisory personnel who can attest to their teaching capabilities.
