The Galleries at CSU

About the Galleries

The Arts play a critical role at our University, as a core component of our student-centered mission, and in the broader community by helping establish our place as an anchor institution in Northeast Ohio. As such, the Arts are integral to CSU 2.0, our strategic plan for growth, and our newly unveiled Master Plan.
In that context, we are announcing a change that is impacting our Arts programming. Our “Galleries at CSU” has left its previous location in the Cowell & Hubbard Building on Euclid Ave. in Playhouse Square. While remaining partners, CSU and Playhouse Square will pursue new opportunities and strategic priorities in terms of the Galleries and that location.
We are excited about the opportunity to develop a new permanent home for the Galleries as part of the Campus Master Plan. In the short term, we’re eager to highlight the work of students, faculty, and community artists by integrating exhibits, including this year's Student Art Show and Merit Scholar Exhibitions, into gallery spaces in the Cleveland area as well as campus facilities.

With a mission to educate, edify, and involve diverse audiences, the Galleries at Cleveland State University presents exhibitions and related programs that promote the understanding of art and its relationship to society. The Galleries also serve as an academic laboratory for the study, contemplation, and critical analysis of works of art and their context.

In addition to learning from the artworks on display, students get an opportunity to gain professional experience and learn job skills in the museum field and in the administration of non-profit organizations, as well as knowledge about the art market and the business of art.

The art gallery provides visual arts programming for the university and community. In addition to important local and regional artists, nationally and internationally known artists have participated in exhibitions, workshops, and lectures.

The Galleries is widely recognized as a major contributor to the cultural life in the region, with an annual attendance from Ohio, the United States, and abroad. The Art Gallery is funded by Cleveland State University with support from the Ohio Arts Council, individual donors and philanthropic foundations.
