Women's and Gender Studies

When you major in Women’s and Gender Studies, you study a range of courses including – politics, communication, literature, history, sociology, and psychology from many different perspectives.

You will select courses from an interdisciplinary set of courses that introduce you to hidden histories, explores complex social structures, confronts injustice and oppression, and prepares you to be citizens of the future. In our classes, you will discover and ask questions that perhaps no one’s ever challenged you with before: How have women been portrayed in the media and religion? In what ways do gender stereotypes influence politics and literature? How does our society compare to others in its treatment of women?

When you complete a course of study in Women’s and Gender Studies, you will have:

  • An expertise in finding and using information on contemporary social issues
  • An understanding of differences of gender, sexuality, race, culture, and social class
  • A foundation for analyzing inequities and initiating change

Women's Studies students go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, in order to analyze the role of gender in shaping human societies of the past and the present, as well as to understand the crucial issues in society and in their own lives.
