AUDITIONS are held for individual shows, and for Department Scholarships.

Show Casting Eligibility

*All current/registered CSU students will be considered for casting, regardless of major (priority will be given to Theatre and Dance majors & minors)
*All students must have at least a 2.0 GPA to be eligible for casting.
*Theatre and Dance majors and Minors must be current on service hours to be considered for casting.
*Theatre and Dance majors pursuing the Acting Track are strongly encouraged to audition for all Mainstage productions.

AUDITION INFORMATION

The audition sign-up form will be posted once it becomes available at a later date. 

Auditions:

Time: 6:00–9:00 p.m. 
Location: Blackbox, TA 521 

If additional audition slots are needed, auditions may be extended until approximately 9:30–10:00 p.m. 

Callbacks: By invitation only

Time: 6:00–10:00 p.m.

The audition sides are for callbacks only. However, they are available for review in advance if you would like to familiarize yourself with the material in the event you are invited to a callback.

AUDITION PREPERATION 

1. Contemporary Monologue: 1–2 minutes 

We suggest selecting a monologue that uses descriptive, poetic language, such as a piece by: 

• Sarah Ruhl 

• Suzan-Lori Parks 

• Another contemporary playwright with a similarly poetic style 

Alternatively, you may choose a monologue from a contemporary translation of a Greek play. 

2. Song: 45 seconds–1 minute 

Please prepare a 45-second to 1-minute excerpt from a modern song in any genre that highlights your unique vocal strengths and skills. 

There will not be a pianist present, so please either: 

• Provide your own backing track 

• Be prepared to sing a cappella 

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN 

CYBELE Leader of the Bacchae - A wise, powerful woman who takes up space, has a big, bold voice, and will speak, sing, and dance; female-presenting 

DIONYSUS God of Wine, Fertility, and Theatre - A god! Powerful, shape-shifting, playful, easy, with a great sense of humor and a healthy dose of righteous anger; may sing and dance a bit; male-presenting but performer could be any gender 

TIRESIAS Blind Prophet - Mystical, can read the future, an old man, has a sense of silliness and humor - male-presenting but performer could be any gender 

CADMUS Founder of Thebes; Father of Semele, Agave, Autonoe, Ino; Grandfather of Pentheus and Dionysus - An old man, dignified yet with a touch of silliness, grounded; family is important to him - male-presenting 

AGAVE Daughter of Cadmus, Mother of Pentheus, Aunt of Dionysus - Determined, proud, a force; has been unleashed by Dionysus and now has joined the Bacchae to dance wildly in the mountains - female-presenting 

PENTHEUS Ruler of Thebes; Grandson of Cadmus, Son of Agave, Cousin of Dionysus - Practical, confident; in fact, certain that he is always in the right - male-presenting 

ALEXIAS Attendant to Pentheus - Obedient and helpful but has a moral compass of his own; watchful, alert, aware of what is going on around him - male-presenting but performer could be any gender 

HEKTOR Herdsman - Awed by what he has seen; uses descriptive colorful language to convey what has happened to him - male-presenting but performer could be any gender 

THE BACCHAE: MA, NANNA, BARRA, DAMARIS, PHOEBE, CHLOE, BRISEIS, KALLIXEINE Chorus of women from Lydia and Phrygia - Will speak, sing, and dance, often in unison, although it is important that they also have their own individual characters; female-presenting but flexible in terms of gender
