Cleveland State University's College of Arts and Sciences Honors Exceptional Student Achievements at Fall 2023 Valedictorian and Outstanding Scholars Reception
On Thursday, December 7, 2023, the College of Arts and Sciences at Cleveland State University celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of its undergraduate students at a special reception. The event was dedicated to recognizing the Fall 2023 Valedictorian and Outstanding Scholars. To qualify for these honors, graduating students had to achieve a minimum 3.8 cumulative grade point average, as well as demonstrate their engagement in areas such as scholarly or creative activity, and campus or community involvement.
This year's Valedictorian is Isis Duncan, a major in English/Creative Writing. Dr. Jim Marino, Associate Professor in the Department of English, introduced Isis, highlighting her remarkable journey and achievements. Despite facing challenges, Isis demonstrated unwavering determination to excel in her passion for writing.
Isis's TRIO/SSS Academic Advisor, Randi Myers, commended her perseverance, saying, "Isis has known what she wanted to do with her life far before I met her and has never swayed from that goal. Isis is driven to change the lives of youth by helping them identify obstacles and work through them creatively with the power of words."
During her time at Cleveland State University, Isis engaged in impactful extracurricular activities. She served as a Literacy and Poetry Teaching Artist at the West Side Community House – Summer of Sisterhood, where she developed daily writing activities for young girls and mentored students. Additionally, Isis worked as a Writing Intern at Twelve Literacy Arts, contributing to workshops and coordinating program events and initiatives.
The College of Arts and Sciences is immensely proud of Ms. Duncan and all of the Outstanding Scholars for their exceptional contributions to the academic community. Cleveland State University congratulates them on their well-deserved honors.
