Keynote Speaker: María Socorro Tabuenca, Ph.D.
"U.S. and Mexican Discourses On and About The U.S. - Mexico Borderlands"
María Socorro Tabuenca has a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at the State University of New York at Stony Brook; and an M.A. in Spanish Literature. She is Professor at the Department of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Tabuenca has been a researcher at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte since 1992 where she was the Regional Director in Ciudad Juárez and the Dean for the North West Region. Tabuenca is the author of Mujeres y fronteras. Una perspectiva de género (1998), and co-author of Lo que el viento a Juarez. Testimonios de una ciudad que se obstina (with Ricardo Aguilar, 2000), and Border Women. Writing from la frontera (with Debra Castillo, 2002).
She is the co-editor of Gobernabilidad e ingobernabilidad en la region Paso del Norte (with Luis Antoni Payán 2004), and Bordeando la violencia contra las mujeres en Ciudad Juárez (with Julia Monárrez, 2008.) She has published articles in national and international journals mainly on border Mexican women writers, border theory, the U.S.-Mexico border's representations in film, and also different representations on the Ciudad Juarez femicide.
