Neurocognitive Systems Laboratory
Our research goal is to characterize interactions between major neurocognitive networks in the human brain. For example, how do verbal representations in the language network interface with non-verbal representations in visual and auditory object recognition networks? What aspects of these interactions are conceptual versus perceptual? How is the functionality of these networks affected by typical and pathological forms of aging? We are currently studying these phenomena in younger and older adults, as well as individuals with disorders of language (aphasia) and object recognition (agnosia) caused by neurodegenerative disease. Methods employed include behavioral/psycholinguistic testing, eye tracking, event-related potentials, and magnetic resonance imaging. A current focus is the functionality of the anterior temporal lobes, which seem to play a critical role in both verbal and object knowledge.
